    Old 40 & Hwy 20 aren't bad alternitives either.

There's several back roads you can take & 50  & 88 are in good shape.

I was up in Carson City for the AMA Women's Conference a few weeks ago & there was a big message board for Mt. Rose (431) Motorcycles not advised.,  I've heard differently but proceed with caution.

BAD DRIVERS – TYPICALLY HAVE NO INSURANCE … PROTECT YOURSELF!

Recently, a BAD DRIVER runs a red light violating a fellow biker’s right of way. The impact ejected him from his bike and he landed on the other side of the intersection with serious injuries, an ambulance ride, emergency room visit, admission, and surgery. Through absolutely no fault of his own, he has serious out-of-pocket medical bills, lost wages, and he will be out of work for a considerable period of time. Investigation reveals the bad driver’s automobile insurance cancelled before the crash. She was driving without insurance! Also, she has nothing in her name, so a lawsuit against her will be fruitless! Adding insult to injury, our fellow biker thought he had “full coverage”; and on closer inspection, he did not have any “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage”! Thus he has almost catastrophic damages and no place to make an insurance claim...    less

I had to make a stop in West Little Rock, AR. This meant extra miles. I was nervous as I was traveling with a brand new Goldwing, and I was straddling a Yamaha FZ6. At the end of the day, we'd traveled 564 miles to get to Sturgis, KY. That may be common place for many of you, but for me this was my longest in a day.

Distance between stops really is a state of mind. Sure, I got hot, my butt was smarting some, and once my hip hurt down to my knee. The longest jaunt between stops was 157.3 miles. The point is that with God's grace, taking alleve before we left, and my motocross padded underpants, I made it :-) Oh! I'd been over 400 on this bike once, and knew I'd make it one way or another. I turned over 30,000 on the odometer on this trip. I probably won't get much out of a budget priced bike that resembles a sport bike with over 30k on it huh? lol

Now, I can't wait for the Yamaha FJR next Spring, or...    less

in the topic Women & Motorcycling AMA Womens Motorcycle conference in the forum Lady Bikers
I went to the AMA Women's Conference in Carson City. Overall I thought the organization was all fubared. Venues kept changing and unless you checked email at 6 am you wouldn't have known the changes. I did help out with the Streetmasters clinic which was cool. They had a great turnout & then did their first open road clinic up thru Lake Tahoe. I didn't go to Virginia City as I hate it up there. (lived in the area for 35 yrs so have been there done that) but heard the BBQ they did was wonderful. I also helped out at the Reno Cycle & Gear Victory Demo booth Friday Afternoon & Sunday. We had over 40 riders come test ride the 5 bikes from the shop in Reno! As the VMC Store Manager & SW Regional Rep for The Victory Motorcycle Club, I brought some donations for a raffle for all that test rode a Victory. I've ridden all those roads(It's my back yard) so much I figured hanging & helping would be fun. Talked to lots of ladies from all over. One of the highlights of the Saturday night dinner was Mary McGee. ( http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/2/13233/Motorcycle-Article/AMA-Honors-Racing-Pioneer-Mary-McGee.aspx ) She is quite the character & had some fantastic tales to tell. I'm glad I went but doubt I will go again. This was so close to home couldn't pass it up. Wrapter, sorry I didn't check in with ya but maybe we crossed paths along the way!

I got hit a couple years ago & thank God wasn't hurt & din't go down. I should have sued but I'm not sue happy. YES it freaked me out. Ride like you are invisible because you are & always give yourself a bail out spot. I'm always in gear aimed to go between the cars if at a stop light. I don't trust anyone.

in the topic Distance per day is a state of mind. in the forum Off Topic
I often do multi 100's of miles daily. Depends on the roads. Sometimes 100 miles is a day trip in the mountain twisties. Others on the big sweepies (my faves) I can go 500 mi and still have a big smile on my face. I stop about every 100-130 mi for fuel & stretch & hydration, etc, I play it by ear & just go at my own pace & have fun. If on a long trip I plan several options along my route (which is also subject to change) and have fun. When I get tired I find a place to stop (gotta love the GPS for that one) But the basics are I ride to have fun & stop when needed. I also take a lot of pic but mostly from the saddle. BOTTOM LINE ~ Ride Safe, Have Fun & Stop When you want.

LOL DUH Talk to some of your favorite local bike shops & see if they can sport some fancies to decorate(not to mention it gives them a bit of advertisement) not to exploit your special moment. Best to ya both!! Post up the pics :)

Contact your local MSF folks & plug in with them for some other riders. You don't say what kind of bike you have, but also plug in with your local bike specific group. Find yourself a mentor that will give you some sage advice. NEVER ride faster than you are comfortable. Ride your own ride. I've got a ton of miles under my belt but I don't like to haul azz like the guys do. I always get there. In fact the big joke is I plan the ride & lead from the rear. Fine by me. That's what I'm comfy with. Best with ya & hope you can hook up with some friends to ride with. ....or like in my case behind LOLOL RIDE YOUR OWN RIDE is the best advice I can give ya & I think everyone will agree with that. Having fun is what it's all about. Puckering in my book isn't fun. Fishy

While I do believe its YOUR choice. CHOOSE WISELY! I'm totally ATGATT!! All The Gear All The Time. TY Sue for starting this thread. I am also happy to see lots of "WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES" signs on the California hiways. I swear before anyone can get their drivers liscence they should have to go out on the roads as a highway worker & see just what the general public does. Gawd forbid the average joe gets on a bike! Most of the drivers have no business behind the wheel let alone on a bike. I'm not discouraging new riders, but it's a commitment to put yourself in harms way, so BE CAREFUL....heheh but have a ton of fun!!!!!

I'm a Gear Nazi, ATGATT, That's MY choice. I agree that it should be your choice & not mandated, but I like to keep what grey cells I have left intact. It may or may not save me but I'm so used to having some sort of lid on my head. Long time construction worker so hard hat all the time, Long time downhill racer so helmet there it's normal for me. I would just hate to have to scrape one of my friends off the pavement because they were riding half nekkid. I don't do blood & guts. I will go down the road & dial 911 tho. IT'S YOUR CHOICE!

in the topic no GPS! in the forum Biker/Motorcycle Humor & Jokes
The big joke with my friends is I'm the one with the GPS & I ALWAYS get lost at least once during our rides. I do love my Garmin 550 and it has gotten me out of a lot of places when I had no idea where I was. The road right behind my house is realtively new & it doesn't show it. Another road I helped build yearsss ago still says (even on Google & MapQuest) to turn off it & go around. It's all a great adventure even if you are old school. I also carry maps just in case. I thought getting lost was a prerequisite on a ride!! That's how ya find new & fun places. The GPS just helps ya find your way back to civilization hopefully. Speaking of Big Brother they can also track your cell phone.

Best to all you looking for a bike!! I've been cageless for about 4 yrs & just acquired a POS 96 Geo Metro which during the rain and cold has been a nice change. I miss riding. Next week I plan on parking LittleG & hopping back on the bike full time. I work out in the rain so it's not like I'm not going to be dressed for it anyhow. I just hate riding thru our construction yard with all the rocks, gravel & equipment in the dark. I don't even like doing it in the car. It's finally gettin light in the AM so VROOOOM

Totally Awesome!! We have an eagle that flies over my job site almost every morning & then I see him flying back home with a fish in his talons! He's doing better than the fishermen out at the lake. Also have a hummingbird that has a nest around me. I would love to see the little nest but don't want to disturb them.

in the topic fun or outright stupidity in the forum Ride Stories
Scary scenario. My friends laugh & it's a big joke that I lead our rides from the rear. I'm not a speed demon. I plan out the roads & stopping spots where we regroup. I never want to hold up riders that want to go balls to the wall, but I also don't want to pick up the pieces(mine in particular by trying to keep up). Good judgement especially on group riders requires planning, meet spots & if several people, a spirited ride group & a more mellow group(Usually those riding 2 up & me LOL). I have also had moments where I took off on my bike only to turn around & say NOPE not today. Glad those uncomfortable days are few & far between but when they do happen LISTEN TO YOUR SELF!

Dolly, if uncomfortable going that way out of your house go another way. I did that for a year! Pushing down is a great tip! But on turning, you may think your turning your head but are you LOOKING that way also? I'm still guilty and tend to focus on traffic instead of my actions in & around town.
