I have never been an abate member but I do ride to several of their rallies in Ca. and Az. and to be honest I tried last year to go to a meeting of Ca. abate # 11 in northern San Diego County and the bar they had listed as a meeting site was closed several months earlier, WTH. After coming home from Ca Abates rally in Kernville last weekend, I checked abate # 11s meeting place and it was the same bar. It is still closed!! Wheels, this was in my inbox this morning, from Dan, the P of L11........ Yes, the Oakvale Bar and Grill is closed. We still meet in the parking lot under the trees. Jimmy, although ABATE is not perfect (no MRO is) it, and other MROs, are essential in the protection of our Freedoms of the Roads. I am in agreeance with you on PACs, and ABATE is the only PAC I belong to. As big a community as we are, sadly, as I am sure you are quite aware, not many of us get invoved in protecting our rights. It's all but impossible to do so without someone lobbying for us and trying to ensure the right folks are in the office as so few really even care if we came or went. It's also important that we are focused and look unified which is all but impossible as individuals IMO.

in the topic Do you ABATE? in the forum Biker Chat
LCStrat, if you need any info on ABATE, please do not hesitate to let me know and I will do what I can. We as motorcyclist really need to start standing up and protecting our Freedoms of the Road. As Jeff stated on the post above, there is strength in numbers and right now, the number of Motorcycle Rights Freedome Fighters SUCKS! It's pretty hard to look credible to the folks that are trying to take your freedoms away when you can not get a fraction of a percent of your own group to stand up and fight the good fight......and also it costs MONEY to fight that fight. I tell people all the time, even if you do not want to be involved or even go to a single ABATE meeting, at least pay membership every year as those dollars are importaint, leave the bike park one day and you'll cover the cost of membership, it's not a real big sacrifice for most. Only a fraction of the over one million registered and licensed motorcyclist in the State of California participate or give support to any type of Motorcycle Rights Organization but you can bet your ass most of them bitch and complain about their Freedoms of the Road constantly being challenged and taken away from them. California is not unique, the same rider apathy exists in every state. It’s time to end the Lip Service and get involved. Join ABATE or MRO of choice and help make a difference or sit quietly and be happy how ever things turn out. If you want to become a State of California ABATE Member, shoot me over your name and mailing address, in a message, and I’ll get a membership card in the mail to you TODAY and I’ll help you identify your closest ABATE Local. For those out of state, check this link and find your states ABATE: http://www.bikercrap.com/Resources/abate_states.htm Join ABATE, and help fight to protect your Freedoms of the Road!

in the topic Where Do You Go for New Tires? in the forum General
Interesting article but I still won't buy into the hype myself. Yes, it's true, rubber will age in time but honestly, any DOT approved tire (which is any tire sold in the USA I belive) is such that it will last far far longer than a tire will ever sit on a shelf. Tire compounds are made to withstand the harshest of environments, from freezing temps to blazing heat (not just road and ambient heat, but heat created by way underinflation), they are reasonably chemical resistant and can withstand a ton of UV expsosure, that's how they keep us safe. None of these factors will be seen sitting on the top shelf of a warehouse. There are about 10,000 things I'd look at in buying a tire before I'd give though to how long it's sat around.....but that's just me... :)  As stated in my last post, if it were remotly an issue, tires would have an expiration date on them....plenty of do gooder organizations looking out for us......

in the topic Where Do You Go for New Tires? in the forum General
Here in SoCal, I live real close to Chaparral Motorsports and you just can't beat their prices. Second choice is J&P Cycles web site, if I happen to be ordering enough stuff to get FREE shipping, but that does not happen often as I think that kicks in at $300. Dennis Kirk web site, same deal as J&P, prices are a bit higher but they offer free shipping with purchase over $100 so that works for me with a tire. As for your mileage, getting 10K miles out of a rear tire is pretty typical with the stock Dunlap. You go with a softer Avon or Metz, you'll get significatly less miles and of course if you are hard on the throttle and breaks, you'll eat them up pretty quick as well. I ride 2 up on a bagger 99% of the time, often loaded, I'm pretty easy on both the throttle and brakes and I consistently get 9-10K miles on the stock Dunlop on the rear, better than 30K in the front. Talking to most of my buddies that ride similar to me, they get about the same. I'm nost sure I've heard anyone getting 15K plus out of a rear tire, unless maybe they rode it down to the cord. The big savings is in taking your wheel off and putting it on yourself, instead of letting the dealership do it. They'll change your tire, if you bring them in the wheel...at least the good one will. I've brought the wheel and a new tire to my dealership and they've changed it for me. As for "OLD RUBBER"...I'm thinking that is a bit of an old wives tale. Today's rubber is pretty damn good and unless you set them out in the sun for years, not much can really hurt them. If the shelf life was an issue, you can bet your ass that DOT would have expiration dates stamped on tires. Hope this helps a bit.

Here in SoCal, straight pipe are everywhere and about the only place you have issue is in the City of IRVINE and a few other spots in the Orange County (Lucky might be able to expand on that, it's his neck of the woods) As for emissions....unless the changing of pipes has a significant effect on your engine performace (lack of back pressure causing loss of engine performance) the emissions issue is negligable at best...the pipe itself does not reduce emmissions, it only has an overall effect on the performace of the engine itself, which is where the emissions are created. If you change pipes and then re-map or make what ever adjustments to your ENGINE that are needed to put it back on the top of it's curve, crap out the tailpipe will not change, might even improve over stock. This is the fight that is constatly being brought to the various states where aftermarket pipes are the target of various do gooder organizations. Join ABATE or another MRO and help fight the fight!

I look at plugs like I look at changing the oil....it's cheep and easy to do so a little overkill (changing too often) don't much hurt the pocket book and darn sure can hurt the bike!

Ron, my brother had that exact same Honda 350 you have in the picture, his was blue. Same time my dad had a Honda 100 just like it, single cyclinder and that chrome heat gaurd on the pipe that was all but useless. Man my dad took me places on that bike, we road the PCH betwen Carlsbad down to Del Mar all the time, my feet could hardly reach the back pegs. he moved up to the Honda 175 a short time later, whick looked a lot more like that 350. Wonder what my brother did with that old 350.

Started out on dirt bikes like most, I guess I was 7 so that makes it about 1970. Started out on a bike few will have heard of, a Gemini 50, imported from China or someplace like that, sold at White Front stores (who even remembers those?). Cool little bike, very similar to the Honda Mini Trail 50's everyone had, fold down handlbars and all. Was a 4 speed though, with a clutch, as apposed to the no cluch 3 speed of the Honda, that 4th gear let you walk away from those Hondas. First street back was about 1982, was a Suzuki GS 650. Got the 1st Harley in Nov of 01, still riding her.

in the topic Aftermarket,OEM parts.. Who do you use? in the forum Off Topic
Depends on what I am looking for. J&P Cycle and Dennis Kirk catalogs are always close at hand. If I need replacement part, that is likely to be a part that would be removed as a customizing job, I check with my buddy Algie at Killing Machine Choppers (he's a Cyclefish Member), to see if he has one laying around, which he does bout 1/2 the time. It's always good to know folks that have custom bike shop!

I’m a modern day biker, got a scooter to prove it, Got ink on my arm, took 5 minutes to choose it.   My putt she’s a beauty 40 grand worth of chrome, I didn’t know now how to ride her, so I trailered her home.   I bought her on credit, accessories up the wazoo, Bought some worn chaps and a leather jacket on HD credit too.   I got me some apes, about 3 feet tall They’re way over my head, can’t reach them at all.   Big carb and big cam, big tire to boot, But I pray she don’t break cuz I can’t fix my own scoot.   Couple falls, couple crashes another 5 grand in fix’n Now I got my permit just can’t take my little vixen.   My ol lady she’s a hottie, she’ll be 18 in June, She loves all the chrome and now gives me the poon.   I wear a bandana, all folded and pressed, No helmet for me, I ride to impress.   I got me an attitude, I’m the baddest in town, But I check it at the door when real patchers are around.   I bought a big knife but I leave it at home, I wore it out once but got in the way of my phone.   I call my friends “bro” now, they got new scooters too We think we need an oil changed, just no sure how to.   I watch Pauly and Cody and Vinny and Senior But I love Mikey the most, he’s the freaking ring leader.   And don’t forget Jessie and his West Coast Choppers, Building every bikers dream, 50 thousand dollar bar hoppers.   I won’t ride to Sturgis, man that’s way too far I’ll just load up the trailer and tow with the car.   I’ll stay in a motel, five stars there’s no doubt One with great food and were credit has clout.   I will trailer near town then jump in with some scooters 1200 miles to drool at some girl with fake hooters.   I might get my ear pierced or another tattoo Of skulls or of dagger or maybe F**k U   If the ol lady don’t like it and thinks I’m a dope No problems here, it’ll wash off with soap Sleep on the ground! You’re kidding me right? Next thing you’ll want me to do is stay up n party all night.   I’ll buy me a patch that says “I RODE MINE THERE” Who the hells gonna know, it’s a lie but who cares.   Ride to live, live to ride, I got riden in my veins, Except when it’s too hot or too cold or windy or it rains.   Yea, I’m a modern day biker, you got something to say? Send me an email, I’ll answer someday.
