Daytona 50th Anniversary Celebration for BMW’s AMA Superbike Wins
Green Flag for Daytona 50th Anniversary Celebration
In March of 1976, BMW Motorrad created a shot heard round the world. A trio of R90S Beemers, built by the legendary Udo Gietl, headed to Daytona International Speedway for the first AMA Superbike race. BMW’s ridden by Gary Fisher, Reg Pridmore, and last-minute addition Steve McLaughlin finished first and second that day in a photo finish! Reg went on to win the series championship for the year. The legend of the Daytona Orange R90S machines was sealed forever.
Now, after months of diligent work with the folks at Daytona International Speedway (DIS), Steve McLaughlin and Rob McIsaac recently completed negotiations and the celebration for the BMW Superbike wins at Daytona, and for the 1976 championship overall, is a go!
The dates are March 6-7, 2026 around the Daytona 200. We are working with BMW MOA, BMW RA, Airheads, Vintage BMW Owners, and AHRMA to finalize the details. With luck, we’ll be able to get the three R90S entrants from that historic season together again at Daytona.
We have space for camping … a dinner opportunity with racers from that era … tech sessions … and a chance to ride on the historic track ahead of the race. We also expect to be able to have a Bikes & Beans session. And more, of course.
We are also looking forward to gathering as many R90S, R100S, and R100CS Beemers as possible for an epic group photo … with the racers.
Registration is open! If you’d like to be added to an email list for updates, or have any questions, please send a note to Rob McIsaac at triangle.bmwcca.activities@gmail.com.
