Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

  • The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is held in Sturgis, South Dakota every summer and has been ongoing since 1938. In the beginning, the rally was held to host motorcycle races, show off with some bike stunts and generally just have a little fun. From those early days until today, Sturgis has grown from a small annual get together to an event like no other and crowds amassing nearly 1 million each year.

    What’s So Fun About Sturgis?

Absolutely! The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is much more than just a gathering to show off bikes and hold a few races. In fact, the small town of less than 7000 residents thrives all year long thanks to the 10 days they host this rally each year. The rally is usually held the first week of August and includes so much excitement that it can take some careful planning to be able to see and do as much as possible during any given time at the event. Not a day, or even an hour goes by at Sturgis that you won’t find a little fun and excitement to get into.

From big beard contests and racing to car and bike shows, musical entertainment and even benefit rides, souvenir stands, pub crawls and special events just for the kids, Sturgis is something that every rider, or even those who don’t ride at all, should try to check out at least once in their lifetime.

    Don’t Own a Motorcycle?

If you love motorcycles and the thrill of the ride, don’t think you can’t attend Sturgis! While you will of course see some of the most amazing motorcycles ever to be crafted when you get to Sturgis, you’ll also see plenty of folks who drive in cars and trucks and carpool with others just to be part of the excitement.

If you want to ride and check out some of the local routes to see sights such as the ever popular Mount Rushmore, the Badlands or other historical sites near Sturgis, you can check into renting a motorcycle for the event and can even have one professionally shipped so you can enjoy a relaxing drive in the comfort of your car or truck and then pick the bike up in time to take it for a spin during the festival time.

This is one of the largest motorcycle rally’s in the world and as such, it is a great way to have fun for days on end, see your favorite motorcycles and meet up with some of your closest friend’s year after year. Sturgis isn’t just a biker rally. Sturgis is a family reunion where you meet brothers old and new, make lifelong friends and create memories to last a lifetime.

Things to Keep in Mind When Attending Sturgis

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a fun way to spend a week or so of your life. You’ll find plenty to do, lots of great music and even better conversation with those you know and those you just met. It’s a brotherhood of people coming together with one goal in common; to have a blast!

While you’ll most definitely have a great deal of fun when you arrive in Sturgis, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind to keep the event safe for you, ensure you are abiding by the law and to make sure your fun will last in your memories for years to come.

Road Rules in and Around Sturgis:

    • Helmets are only required for riders ages 18 years old and younger.
    • No windscreen on your motorcycle? You must wear glasses when riding.
    • Motorcycles must be equipped with both side mirrors.
    • Please do not drink and drive. BAC in South Dakota is legally .08 percent, but on a motorcycle, it should realistically be 0 for safety purposes.
    •  Passengers must sit behind the driver and cannot be balanced on the front.

Stay hydrated! There will be lots of beer slinging going on inside the rally, especially if you choose to take part in the pub crawls. During the day, you’re going to want to keep the water flowing so your nights indulging in the adult beverages won’t leave you with a headache. Well, not with too bad a headache at any rate.

Watch the fire! Nothing makes a campsite better than a good fire and toasting some marshmallows for S’mores. You need to check the local fire ordinances because during the summer, open fires are often banned and if there is a current burn ban, even a camp fire will not be allowed. Not to worry though! If you can’t have a camp fire, just spend more time in town enjoying the music and other shows!

Shopping Maniacs Beware! Love to shop? Plan on buying some souvenirs or Sturgis t-shirts to take home and remember the festival after you leave? If you ride in on your motorcycle and will have limited room to pack for the ride home, the best option will be to swing by the post office or contact a shipper to send everything home ahead of your return.

Keep Your Shirt On! This isn’t Mardi Gras and seeing shirts pop up to show the skin underneath can cost you a fine of more than $100.

Where Not to Park. Watch where you park to make sure you don’t park in areas that include a “No Parking” sign. Motorcycles get towed frequently in Sturgis and unless you have money to burn, no one likes a parking or impound ticket.
