If you spend any time at all talking to God, whether it be on a regular basis, or just when you’re back is against a wall, you have no doubt experienced the silent treatment at some point. I’ve been sending up a prayer that’s gone unanswered for 18 months myself. It’s not a selfish prayer like wanting a garage full of bikes or the winning lottery numbers. It’s a need. So I pray harder, ask others to talk to God, and all I’ve gotten is...nothing. Silence.
I get impatient with God.
I get mad at God.
I begin to doubt God.
When I’m out riding with my brothers, noise is something I’ve grown accustomed to. When we try to communicate we usually have to get pretty creative with our own version of sign language and hand signals. Reading lips helps if they’re not wearing a mask. Even so, I’m often left guessing what’s being said to me or I hear nothing at all. The obvious problem is that it’s too loud and we’re distracted. That’s kind of the way our lives tend to be, filled with noise and distractions.
It could be that God isn’t silent after all; it’s possible that we are not tuned-in. We are constantly surrounded by background noise and distractions in our lives. God could be trying to communicate with us, but we can’t hear him because his voice is drowned out. Our minds are often tuned into the internet, TV, work, and just “doing life” in general.
I once heard a story about a man who lost his watch in an ice house. He, along with a bunch of his co-workers, tore the place apart looking for the watch. They all searched every inch of the place, but they couldn’t find it. A little boy came along after hearing about their search and snuck into the building. A few minutes later he came out with the watch in his hand. All of the men were blown-away and asked, “How did you find it?” The boy said, ”Well I went in by myself, closed the door, laid real still on the floor, and then I began to listen. After a while, I could hear the tick, tick, tick of the watch.”
