The U.S. House of Representatives has adjourned for its traditional August district work period, and the Senate is expected to follow shortly. When lawmakers return to Washington after Labor Day, they will face an ambitious agenda and a pair of critical September 30 deadlines. Congress must complete work on a new surface transportation authorization (Highway Bill) before the current law expires, while also passing government funding legislation to keep federal agencies operating and avoid a shutdown. The fall promises to be fast-paced, and decisions made during those final weeks could have lasting consequences for motorcyclists.
For the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), the congressional recess provides a valuable opportunity to advance our priorities. With members of Congress back in their home states and districts, Capitol Hill staff often have more time to meet, discuss policy, and prepare for the legislative battles ahead. The MRF Government Relations Team will use these weeks to continue building support for issues important to America's street riders, ensuring lawmakers and their staff understand the motorcycling community's concerns before Congress reconvenes.
Members of Congress spend August meeting with constituents, attending local events, and visiting businesses throughout their districts. If you have the chance to attend a town hall, community event, or simply stop by a district office, take it. Tell your elected officials about the MRF, explain why protecting motorcyclists matters, and share the legislative priorities that affect riders in your state. Personal conversations with constituents remain one of the most effective ways to influence policymakers.
The next few weeks will help shape the outcome of a busy fall legislative session. While Congress may be away from Washington, the work of protecting the rights and freedoms of motorcyclists never stops and neither does the MRF.
