  The modern day Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a far cry from the earliest days when the Black Hills Classic was a one day motorcycle race event with a mere 200 or so spectators. Over the years, the popularity of the races grew as did the number of spectators, and with the addition of the hill climb and motocross events in 1961, the gathering motorcyclist eventually overflowed onto the quiet city streets of Sturgis, South Dakota.
  
  As the crowds grew, the length of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was extended to 3 days, then 5 days and on to the 7 day event that it is today. The addition of food and merchandise vendors along Main Street in 1979 changed the completion of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally significantly and since that time the draw of the motorcycle races and hill climbs has slowly taken a back seat to a sea of polished chrome and tens of thousands of scantily clad biker babes!
