We have put together a simple list of the primary Virginia state motorcycle laws to help you when traveling through Virginia on a motorcycle. These Virginia motorcycle laws where confirmed accurate as of the time of publishing and are provided to you as a reference only. Safety Helmet: Required by law
Eye Protection: Required by law unless equipped with windscreen
Passenger Age: No Restriction
Helmet Speakers: Unlawful to operate motor vehicle, while using earphones.
Mirrors: One required by law
Headlight: Modulating headlight permitted
Turn Signals: Not Required
Handlebars: No Restrictions
Muffler: It shall be unlawful for any person to operate or cause to be operated any motorcycle not equipped with a muffler or other sound dissipative device in good working order and in constant operation. No person shall remove or render inoperative, or cause to be removed or rendered inoperative, other than for purposes of maintenance, repair or replacement, any muffler or sound dissipative device on a motorcycle.
Noise Restrictions: No acoustical criteria.
Riding Two Abreast in Lane: Driving two abreast in a single lane. A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, so as to be abreast of another vehicle in a lane designed for one vehicle, or drives any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, so as to travel abreast of any other vehicle traveling in a lane designed for one vehicle. However, this section shall not apply to any validly authorized parade, motorcade, or motorcycle escort, nor shall it apply to a motor vehicle traveling in the same lane of traffic as a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, or moped.
Lane Splitting: A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, so as to be abreast of another vehicle in a lane designed for one vehicle, or drives any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, so as to travel abreast of any other vehicle traveling in a lane designed for one vehicle.
