We have put together a simple list of the primary South Carolina state motorcycle laws to help you when traveling through South Carolina on a motorcycle. These South Carolina motorcycle laws where confirmed accurate as of the time of publishing and are provided to you as a reference only. Safety Helmet: Required by law under age 21, reflectorization required. NOTE: in conflict with state law the city of Myrtle Beach has passed a helmet ordinance requiring helmet use within city limits.
Eye Protection: Required by law under age 21, unless equipped with windscreen
Passenger Age: No Restriction
Helmet Speakers: No Restrictions
Mirrors: One required by law
Headlight: Daytime headlight required. Modulating headlight permitted.
Turn Signals: Not Required
Handlebars: No Restrictions
Muffler: No acoustical criteria.
Noise Restrictions: No acoustical criteria. NOTE: in conflict with state law the city of Myrtle Beach has passed a helmet ordinance requiring helmet use within city limits and place restrictions on motorcycle exhaust systems.
Riding Two Abreast in Lane: (a) All motorcycles are entitled to full use of a lane and no motor vehicle shall be driven in such a manner as to deprive any motorcycle of the full use of a lane. This shall not apply to motorcycles operated two abreast in a single lane.
Lane Splitting: b) The operator of a motorcycle shall not overtake and pass in the same lane occupied by the vehicle being overtaken. (c) No person shall operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic, or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.
Insurance: Compulsory Liability (Minimum Limits)(15/30/10) - Graduates of rider education program may apply for reduction in motorcycle insurance rates.
