What exactly do you mean by chewing up? Is it wearing down evenly, or more on the sides or center? Is it worn smooth or really rough?

Bent rim, incorrect tire pressure, bike overloaded, swing arm not aligned properly, Tire is mounted backwards, Your 16 year old son is doing burn outs when your not home. Take your pick

Center of the tire is wearing too fast. After a ride of 100 miles or so I notice rubber on the rim.

Are you buying the same brand, from the same place?

Its the tire that came with the bike. Notice it just this past riding season. I just got back into riding with this bike after not riding for 25 years.

If it is just one tire, could be the tire itself... maybe it sat and dried out a bit?

I agree,IMO most likely a result of sitting too long n dried out the tire.

Maybe if you feed it more it will not eat your tires. Center wear is usually Over inflation. Did you check your clearance between your tire and fender?

Breeze. Vulcans have progressive rate rear springs, yours may me set too soft. That can account for the tire rubber on your fender as well.
