Ignition Issue?

My 2000 sportster xlh883 is cutting out when I call for power on the hiway. As the engine cuts out, the speedometer drops to zero. Is this an ignition module issue or crank sensor?

When the speedo drops to zero, do the rest of the electronics cut out to?

I don't believe so. Lights stay on etc. could a bank indicator or VOES cause this?

One more time; it's the crank sensor.

Yup, sounds like the crank sensor.

Cost about $60 and should take less than 20 minutes to change.

First thing I would do is check and clean the connectors. If that don't work change it.

Turns out it wasn't the crank sensor. It's the stator. Though checking all the connectors is sterling advise. Thanks folks.

Okay, made a liar out of myself. Turns out to be the battery, which tested as good. replaced it anyway. All is good now.

Amazing how many problems the battery can cause on these new bikes.

I got an 07 ultra and have had a lot of problems with ignition, first I replaced starter with a upgraded one, then I replaced stator and regulator then the clutch basket etc and a new battery and it still gives me a hard time starting when hot. Any ideas ?
    Thanks.

i am officially in the club! My beloved 07 Softail won't start, only clicks... I removed the battery, cleaned all of the connections, the voltage meters at 13V. I am thinking about replacing the battery anyhow. Then prolly the starter would be the likely next step?

    Success !
One new battery from Harley for a CRAZY $143:00 and my bike runs like a top. Even a little more snotty. Just
to re-cap: the bike would only click click click when I tried to start it, it metered at 13 volts, But the battery was shot.
Not cheap, but I am happy.
