Thanks for the WELCOME guys... Been working in Palau now a little over 12 years... In and out of the Windward side of Oahu... Kaneohe Bay and Kailua Town. Spent my last 6 years of my USMC life there and decided to plant myself. We discovered Palau and even though it is paradise, we manage to stay pretty busy with work (Graphic Designers-wife and I operate a screenprinting and signage business), diving, fishing, sailing, kayaking, and working. Palau has about 40 miles of paved road, so, there really is no use in having a touring bike here... Anyhow, we met up with some people passing through (The Forwoods out of New Zealand- their adventure on a Harley covered something like 187 countries and many, many, thousands of miles. You can google them-use: Forwood. Palau was one of the last 5 countries on their adventure)- talking to them rekindled the need to get back on a bike and see the USA... The scooter has been ordered (just got my VIN number) and the adventure should start towards the end of June, middle of July... Any help/suggestions on the right camping gear will be greatly appreciated.... Thanks again... |

Welcome Daniel,
Always nice to here that people are still riding their bikes. There are way too many people that buy them as status symbols and spend more time telling people they have one, than they do riding it.
I do love the rallies, but I agree there is nothing better than getting on the bike with a good friend at your side and just going, no destination, no route...just time. I have found some of the best bars and places to eat that way, and discovered areas within a couple hundred miles of home I never knew existed.
Again, welcome and enjoy.

Hey kbdave you've just made me want to move to Palau! I've always wanted to visit Hawaii, but with all you just wrote I could easily see spending a lifetime there. These people you met sound interesting. I'll be sure to google them for more. As for camp gear I got some great suggestions from other users here, some of those tips are in the forum I created so that I could ask advice for my road trip. I think cycleridge was the user who had a very useful checklist on his site (I'm hoping I just gave credit to the right user on that one) that will serve as a nice baseline for you. ______________________

Hello everybody. Just joined and love what I see. Look forward to conversing with all and sharing the various bikes. I own a Suzi and love it. No it is not a Harley, but I love just the same. Hope to meet those in the Atlanta area and do some cruising. I like easy riding away from the hustle of the city. |

Welcome Mike, No it's not a Harley, but it does have two wheels and as long as you get out and enjoy riding you are more than welcome here... We are about the riders, not the rides. ______________________

Well guys, I am back... As I promised that I would keep in touch... Here I am. I finally picked up my bike in San Diego on the 17th of July... After 30 years of not riding (as I previously might have mentioned), it took some courage to put my leg over that new electra glide classic and in a few minutes I went on down the road. I did 2 days of solo riding in San Diego with my sis and bro in law (thanks Lucky for volunteering to ride with me.. I would still like to get together when we get back to San Diego. I will text you and if you are free we can meet up, ok?) After those two days of solo riding, I got my wife on the back on the third day and on the 21st of July we started what will probably end up being 10,000 miles of riding in five weeks. We started in San Diego, went up to Fresno; Frisco; Crater Lake, Oregon; then headed east to Idaho, Jackson Hole and Yellowstone Park in Wyoming, then on to South Dakota to Sturgis (what a madhouse and so many bikes), the badlands, checked out all the national monuments, and roads (needles being our favorite)...; then east to Minnesota; down to Milwaukee to the Harley-Davidson Museum. We then headed north and tried to make it to Canada up around the west side of Lake Superior but we ended up getting bogged down due to weather in a little place called Newberry Michigan... So, we ended up heading on down to Port Huron and into Canada... I am presently writing this entry from a super 8 motel in Grimsby, Can. some 30 minutes out of Niagara Falls (Canada side) where we are now weathering out one hell of a thunder storm, that hit this area today. We are hoping to be able to check out Niagara Falls in the morning and then we are to head up on the north side of Lake Ontario to Kingston and crossing back into the US. We will turn south to DC and start our turn west back to San Diego. We have been working on a web site to allow our families and friends to share the experience and I hope to stop the party long enough in the next couple of days to actually upload what we have so far. I guess I should thank some of the cyclefish members for helping me out with advise on the camping and packing side of things... Your help was much appreciated. Thank you. I will stay in touch and share a bit more of our Harley adventure later. Have tons of pics to post in the gallery and will do that in the next couple of days... Ride Safe... and thanks again for the help guys.... Dave |
