What in the world?

'bout 100 miles on the bike this weekend, that was fun. Had a really strange problem with the bike for about the last 20 or so. NOT fun lol. No clue what was wrong, bike was acting "cold," wouldn't stay running without the choke out about 1/2 way, so it was like driving with the throttle locked in place. SUCKED!

Since I had to keep the RPM so flippin' high, I ran highway for most of it, and she ran fine between 55 - 70; once in town I managed to hit all the lights green, and didn't have to drop past 3rd through town, so we made it home without too many problems (shifting was a little more challenging, but not impossible). Once home, I pushed the choke in and she idled in the driveway *almost* fine. I just don't know what was wrong. I had the carbs cleaned, rebuilt, and tuned a couple months ago, so I'm fairly sure that that's not the problem. Maybe bad gas???? I don't know. Any suggestions? I'm stumped.

Not a commercial - but try some Berrymans B12. Magic stuff for carbs, injectors and will even clean fouled plugs.

check for a dirty fuel filter, look for water in the fuel

fuel filter is almost new, so are the plugs. ran around 60 miles yesterday with NO problems, and was about 20 miles into today's ride before the motor cut out making a 1st gear turn onto a secondary road. wouldn't restart till i choked her, like i said, acted cold. maybe water in the gas, we had a pretty cold night after i fueled last so there was time to get condensation. refueling tomorrow, so I guess I'll know then if it was a gas issue.

IN THE WINTER THE AIR FUEL RATIO CHANGES DUE TO COLD, AND PRESURES. I HAD TO RICHEN MY CARB IDLE SCREW ALMOST 2 3/4 TURNS TO GET IT TO RUN PROPERLY. i DID IT A 1/2 TURN AT A TIME UNTIL IT QUIT POPPING THROUGH THE CARBS (CAUSED BY A LEAN CONDITION). WRITE DOWN HOW MANY TURNS CAUSE COM APRIL OR MAY YOU WILL START BACK THE OTHER WAY.

Old gas? My Honda Sabre would act the same way if I forgot to put Staybil or some other gas stabilizer for the winter or during times when the bike was not used regularly. You may want to add some stabilizer to what is left in the tank and then fill the tank the rest of the way with fresh gas. Just a thought!

I had a similar problem way back in the day with my VW Beetle. I put a Holley performance carb on it and when I went into the mountains where it was cooler and more humid ice would form on the carb. So have you considered ice. What was the temp? Air moving fast through the carb will cool things amazingly. If you had a tiny bit of water in the gas or if it was humid it might have frozen and caused the trouble.

My 86 Hawk would do the same thing the first few rides of the year after sitting for the winter even though I had stabilizer in it. Added some seafoam and ran the hell out of it and it cleared up.

funny thing, I never really "parked" her. I had her tuned in mid-late fall, and rode every chance I got that the roads were dry. I had her out when it was 15-20 degrees. I fired her up today and she idled at 1200-1500, which is right on. I'll add a fuel additive of some brand when I throw fresh gas in her, I think that sitting over night with 1/2 tank probably put some condensation in the tank, and she was sucking down a little water. Otherwise, I'm thinking of moving to Arizona in the fall, so I'll have to adjust the carbs then anyhow (altitude change). Thanks folks!
