Harley Davidson Security Alarm - Setting PIN Override

Topics: 64   Posts: 922
I wanted to remind everyone how important it is to set the manual PIN override for your Harley Davidson alarm system.

I was in Laughlin when I noticed the couple parked next to me cusing at their bike.  I asked what was up, and found out the alarm was set on their bike, but the battery had apparently gone dead on the key fob. Since they had not set the PIN override code, there was no starting the bike.  They were lucky to be somewhere this could be easily fixed...I let them use the battery from my fob to start the bike.  Imagine if they were in the middle of the desert and stopped for a drink of water???  Especially with the new bikes where the alarm sets automatically and the "working" fob needs to be near the bike.

If you haven't set the PIN over ride for your HD alarm system...do it now!  Here's how you do it...

(To view how to deactivate the security system with the manual PIN code, see below.

Don't forget that part about writing it down somewhere. After I read this, I remembered that I forgot my code!

Good point AzRider.

Click the image link below, print out the card, write your PIN on it, and carry it in your wallet.

Thanks Lucky, I would have never remembered to do this, and no one told me to when I bought my first Harley.

One more quick note regarding the new Smart FOB on Harleys made 2007 and later.

As you probably know, these smart alarm FOBs are proximity FOBs, meaning anytime they are within about 6 feet of the bike your security system is disarmed.  I had never thought about it, but when I travel away from home I always keep the extra key and FOB in my inside jacket pocket.  Problem with that is most of the time I stop, my jacket is in the saddlebag, leaving the alarm disarmed!

So if you are going to carry an extra key, don't carry an extra alarm FOB.  Just make sure you have your override code programmed!

Does anyone know if the battery goes dead on your Harley, does it still remember the alarm override code?

I have replaced my battery but never had to test the over-ride. I certainly hope it would if not it is a terrible design

Good question.  I never though  to test my code after battery replacement....I'll get back to you after I get home today.

Sorry never got back to you. Just checked and it does remember the code even if you remove the battery from the bike. Still it's probably not a bad idea to use the code to override the alarm every now and then. First it will ensure something wacky didn't happen to erase the code, and second, it's good practice so it will be a snap when you need it.

Overriding the alarm occasionally is a good Idea Lucky. I carry my override sequence card in my wallet but I haven't done it in 4 years so I would be hard pressed to do it right, especially in a must do situation. I think I will try today. Thanks!

You know I read this a while back and still haven't done it. So I don't wind up regretting it, I'm going out to the garage right now to do it.
