Our 5 Week Road Trip on Ruby...

Topics: 4   Posts: 22
 Howzit all...

As I promised, I am finally getting around to sharing a bit of our road trip on Ruby (our '09 Harley Electra Glide Classic): 5 weeks, 24 states and a bit of Canada. A total of 10,587 miles.

Our trip started and ended in San Diego, where we picked up our bike at San Diego Harley-Davidson.  After almost 30 years of not riding and living in the Republic of Palau for 13 years (where the top speed limit is 25 mph), our small adventure was nothing short of kick butt... We camped and stayed at hotels and averaged about 278 miles a day on our 38 days of riding.  Due to severe weather, we had 4- (10) and 1- (11) hour actual driving days.

Since our goal was to ride and keep on riding, we visited far too many places and spent far too little time there.  However, our trip did allow us to figure out where we would like to go on our next trip coming up June/July of this coming year (anyone interested in a 10,000 miler?.) Anyways, I want to take this opportunity to again thank all the cyclefish members that helped us getting our plan together. The input we received as to the do's and don'ts, routes and camping gear must haves, helped us make sound decisions which led to our very enjoyable experience. One other thing, and I do not want to sound like I am selling, someone at cyclefish suggested reading the book "Proficient Motorcycling" by David L. Hough. The book is worth it's weight in gold. Not only does it explain how the bikes we ride work, it touches (and in most cases-covers) on all aspects of getting there (on a bike) safely. Wonderful book.  Newbie or big guy, this book will have some value for everyone. Hell, the only problem I see (for some of you all) is that the guy that wrote it is a Metric Cruiser kind of guy.  He even makes fun of the hard biker appearance in a small section of the book.

Anyways, since part of our business consists of creating web sites, we decided to put up a small one of our own, to allow us to share our adventures with our family and friends...  Check it out...  URL is:  www.daveandmargie.net Leave a comment on the guest book if you like.

Ride safe,

Dave Mendoza

Sounds like a great time Dave. I would take you up on that 10,000 miler, but it will have to wait a few more years until our last son is out of the house...4 years, 248 days, but who's counting!

wow sounds like a wonderful ride we did a nice ride this summer too... we did 2300 miles in 8 days.from Cumberland MD,up through OH, MI, into canada across east into NY and down home again. We spent a few days not riding much so we could see things along the way. Like Rosie's diner in MI. This year are going to Houston for two weeks to see our oldest grandson. The planning has begun. Steven lays out the route and I lay out things to see and do going there and coming home. I do know the Tail of the Dragon is one thing we will do again maybe we will do it coming and going. Any ideas of other things to do or see give me tips.
Steven and I wish we were on the west coast to ride with you.

Lucky; I hope it happens; but, like Jerry Clower said, they go away long enough to make more then bring them back

Going back out for another road trip- June/July 2010... A small one this time... 4 weeks and 7,000 miles starting in San Diego, going through the south end of Nevada, then across the southern part of Utah to Boulder Co. then back east through Salt Lake City, Utah and up to Twin Falls and Boise Idaho. Then we are heading north/northwest to Portland, up to Long Bow Oregon, where we will turn south and go along the coast to Frisco. We will turn back north to Redding (family) for a few days rest and then southwest to Nevada again for for my first ever Viet Nam Reunion in Reno. From there we are to come back into California and head south down to our San Diego starting point. Anybody up for it?

Dude, you guys are the friggin motorcycle commando's. i hope I can arrange it to take just one trip like that. I've rode in every state east of the Mississippi, and a few west of it, but on numerous trips over several years. you ever cruise through Ohio, give us a holler, we'll feed you and put you up for a night.

Hey DEFCON... Thanks for the invite... Ohio was one of the few states we didn't get to on our last trip. We live in Palau Micronesia (13 years) so, you are safe for a year or so. However, we are scheduled to return back to the continental US soon and then do some real touring. We just might take you up on it someday. Thanks...

Nothing like a good road trip !!! We (my brother and I) did 9 states, 4095 miles last fall. It was truly a "Ride of a Lifetime" !!!

Rex - Hey thanks man... Haven't had a chance to play with it... Hear it needs some adjustments and cleaning up... Thanks.
Flatlander- we love our bike... Sweet ride... Hope to put some miles on her when we get back to the world...
shedsruty59 - What happened? Thought this was a family oriented site... The bike has ruby red pinstripe throughout... Stock stuff... After reading your statement, the old lady has fuming red eyes... She isn't laughing either (although I am).... Ha....

BlvdCruiser - Hey man... I my ride of a life time (working on the plans now...) will be going from San Diego to the tip of south america () on the west side and then back up all the way to Disneyland (for the wife) in Orlando on the east coast and then back to San Diego through the southern states. Haven't figured out the distance or all the requirements yet, but it should be a nice one... Hoping to schedule 10 weeks for 2012 or 2013. Would like to get that one in before I start feeling the miles too much... Know what I mean...? What's the gun for exactly?
