On May 2nd of last year, Anita Zaffke was on her motorcycle stopped at a traffic light when Lora Hunt slammed into her at roughly 50 mph.  The police – and today a jury – found that Ms Hunt was painting her fingernails when she approached the intersection where Anita Zaffke was stopped.
 
Today – one year and four days after this tragedy – a jury in Waukegan (Lake County, IL) found Lora Hunt guilty of reckless homicide for killing Anita Zaffke.  Sentencing is scheduled for June 15th.
 
This senseless, shameful, criminal act by Ms Hunt has caused an outcry for justice in the motorcycling community.  More information can be found at www.blacknailbrigrade.org.

Can never relax like you are alone on the road with motorcycle, I hate stopping at traffic lights, hate being the first closest to the light and hate being the last, always leave room to move........

This is one of my biggest complaints about stopping at the end of traffic, light or sign. The laws here don't allow splitting traffic, moving or stopped. Just to set the record straight; this is on the extreme scale of stupid as far as traffic laws go. At signals and signs I pull between the autos whenever possible, ticket me. And if I am first at stop I am so far to one side of the lane and ready to bail. Hopefully this individual will receive the maximum punishment. Then she will have plenty of time to do her nails without putting others in harms way. Coming from California and for almost 40 years of riding there, enforcement and pleasure, it amazes me that spliting traffic on a motorcycle is associated with 'cheating death.' Like everything else, if properly taught and the motoring public is educated it is an extremely safe manuver when riding. Next time you're stopped at a signal look and see how much distance there is between cars. For the most part a 'trike' could split. Okay maybe a slight exageration. Don't stop behind traffic, offset between the cars. Ride often and ride safe...

They need to bring back public hangings for people like this - then maybe others will start to pay attention.

Agree . In Ireland you will fail a motorcycle test if you stop in traffic when it is safe to "split"... the rules here state it is safer to be outside traffic than in it, at least you can be seen there.
