Too Cool for School

  • What is it with riders in this town man?  Lexington is home to some seriously sweet bikes.  Not a spring, summer, or fall day goes by that I don't see a nice stretched out bobber, a bitchin fast little cafe custom, or one of those ridiculous, Big Dawg kit choppers roll by, along with dozens on dozens of stock Harleys, big baggers, and boring crotch rockets, but try and find anyone for a good couple hours on the road and everyone looks at you like you're insane.

For those of you uninitiated to Lexington, it's 2 big circles, New Circle and Man'o'War.  The downtown area is referred to as "inside the circle", as in inside of New Circle Boulevard, Hwy 4, and outside of that circle is "inside Man'o'War", which would be between New Circle Blvd and Man'o'War Blvd.  Outside of Man'o'War, that's "Outside the Circle".  Downtown is a mess of one way streets and stop lights a block apart.  Inside Man'o'War is fine dining and upscale shopping.  Outside the Circle, well, cross over Man'o'War heading out of town in any direction you want and you're in some gorgeous country.  Horse farms, mountains, sloping turns and windy switchbacks for miles in any direction.

But there's no one riding those beautiful roads!  It kills me to be riding some of the most gorgeous and fun rides in this half of the country and having to ride them by myself.  Getting out and riding solo is nice, and I do it a lot, but everything's more fun with a friend along for the ride.  The riders here all seem way too concerned with keeping their chrome shiny and their paint clean than doing any riding.  So here's my message to the bar hoppers, the cafe racers, the kit choppers, and the rest.

Get out of the circle.  Quit trying to impress people, and get some dirt on your bike.  It's a lot more fun than a stoplight every 20 yards.

  • LCStrat I've got to agree, though I've never been in Lexington. A lot of bikes are for image, and some of the new riders have never been out in the country to enjoy the ride. I ride because it's a passion. I love to ride. I'm fortunate in that I'm with the CMA...  more
  • Seawolf You sound like a biker from the old school that I came from. Before the hordes of yuppies and celebrities took up riding, a biker rode to get away from town and always packed a bedroll and sometimes a tarp for overnight rest on the road. Of course the...  more
  • RufCut I don't know if you would consider me "new" or "old" school. I just love to ride. I started with my first bike ('70 Moto Guzzi 750) at 18 and been riding about as much as I could since. that was nearly 34 years ago. After a 15 year hold I am now back...  more
