Soul Soothing Travel

  • Hey y'all.  Greetings from Texas.  For those of you who have tried to contact me, I've been on vacation and my home computer is messed up, keeping me from getting online at this time.

This past weekend I had grown tired of wasting my vacation staring at the walls or doing little odd jobs around the house so decided to get the hell outa dodge for a couple of days.  I didn't really have the money for much of a trip, but didn't let that stop me.  I loaded up some clothes, a map, and a cooler with sandwich stuff and cold beverages and headed northwest with no particular destination in mind.  I ended up in the Hill Country of Texas and just stopped wherever something caught my interest.  I spent some time in a couple of state parks, hiking and just comuning with nature (pics are forthcoming) and generally shaking all the city dust and cobwebs off my soul.  It was an awesome weekend.  I ate sandwiches and chips all weekend and just turned down any road that looked interesting as I toured the hills.

I spent one afternoon climbing Enchanted Rock and wished I had "days" instead of hours to take in all the panoramic beauty of the place and watching the sun set over the Rock (next time I want to see the sunrise on the eastern face...I can only imagine the beauty of it).  The next morning I got up and drove to Perdanales Falls State Park...another must see if you ever visit Texas.  Oddly enough, I'd always wanted to go there, but something had always gotten in the way, so it was especially special to me to finally get there and see it.  I spent the whole day hiking, climbing and just generally getting my head right.  I spent the night in Historic Fredricksburg that night and walked the city the next morning taking in all the shops, people, and numerous bikes rolling through.  From there it was a trip down Hwy 16 through some of the most scenic and best motorcycling area one could ask for and on to Bandera.  Of course I stopped several times along the way to take in local sights and views.  I saw a lot of wildlife along the way but fortunately for all of us, none of them ran out in front of me...LOL.  Stayed in Bandera on Sunday night and decided that there was too much light where I was staying to fully appreciate the hill country view of the stars so I drove about 16 miles out to a deserted rest area on the top of a hill and spent a couple of hours star-gazing and watching the shooting stars light up the atmosphere.  On Monday morning I wound a meandering (and reluctant) way home stopping briefly in New Braunfels at a beautiful park to get my last fix of nature before getting on I-10 to head back to Houston.

All in all, it was a very relaxing and rejuvenating weekend. (Can't wait to go again...)  I'm back at the grind again now, pretty much broke (my 18 year old has prom and graduation this month), and again dealing with the day to day things one must deal with to get by, but all I have to do is close my eyes for a moment and the memories and sights I enjoyed this weekend come flooding back to soothe my soul and carry me through til the next time I get to "escape".  And trust me it won't be too terribly long til I run back to God's country...even if it's just for a couple of days.

  • LCStrat Sounds like a much needed ride getaway. Glad you enjoyed it, and I pray that you get away again soon.
  • blurplebuzz Nothing like some nice riding and the unknown destinations that await those willing to travel tht road. Riding solo is the best way to get a feel for an area, especially when you have no particular place to be.
    good post !!!
