New Michigan Helmet Law Moving Forward

  • A bill that would allow some Michigan motorcyclists to ride without a helmet is moving forward in the state legislature.

Yesterday the House Transportation Committee signed off on the plan that would allow riders at least 21 years old to go without a helmet if they meet certain training or experience requirements.

The bill now heads to the full House for a vote - similar legislation already passed in the Senate.

There's no word yet on if Michigan's Governor Snyder supports the plan.  He did not appear interested in considering the motorcycle helmet law on its own when it passed the Senate this summer. But he has indicated he might consider the helmet law as part of a broader legislative package related to auto insurance.

Former Governor Jennifer Granholm vetoed similar bills two times when she was in office.

  • Troll How does it affect out of state riders. Would sure be cool if Michigan went free. originally from there, still have family there. it's just a pain to stop, put on a lid, be uncomfortable, all to enjoy what I consider my home state.
