Run Whatcha Brung at the Old Town Bike Drags

  • With few exceptions, long gone are the days of old school motorcycle drag races.  The Old Town Bike Drags are one of those exceptions!

Once upon a time, long before the day of the corporate sponsored Supper Rally, bikers used put together small events that often included bike drags.  Sometimes organized, sometimes not but always a great time had by all.  Most of the bikes were ride-ins and home builds while a few of the wilder rides might have had the support of local business or a club sponsor.   There were no entrance fees for spectators, no fancy starting line Christmas tree lights and certainly no national TV coverage.  The days of the old school motorcycle drag races are all but a thing of the past but there are still a few around.

One such event that started up about a half dozen years ago is the Run Whatcha Brung Bike Drags held in Old Town, Idaho.  The brain child of a long time biker who has wanting to involve the town in a fund raising event for Veteran’s, Algie and his foxy lady he affectionately calls the Harley Harlot, began to rally the troops together and before they knew it, they had themselves an old school motorcycle drag race event set up that would run right down the center of Main Street Old Town, Iowa.

The Old Town motorcycle drags are as old school as it gets and the Run Whatcha Brung mantra holds true to form with the majority of bikes paired up and running down the quarter mile of asphalt being daily riders, bikes that rolled in to town for the event and departed the same way.  You’ll see everything from stripped down ridged framed knuckleheads to souped up, chromed out baggers lining up to take a run down Main Street.

To the pleasure of the on looking crowd, a couple of hot rod scooters always make an appearance at the motorcycle drags.  More for exhibition than all out competition, everyone loves to see these high horsepower hogs, line up, burn out and bust the stop watch.

These motorcycle drags are a family affair as well as fund raising event and just like in the old days, everyone pitches in to do what they can to make the event a success.  There is plenty of food available; the standard fare of vendors; music; a bike wash and a favorite amongst bikers, a swap meet.  And it’s not all about bikes as you’ll see several four wheeled hot rods burning up the quarter mile through the day.

There is not a dull moment at the Old Town motorcycle drags as intermission brings out some great talents including exhibition and stunt riding, always a real crowd pleaser.

No self-respecting old school motorcycle drags  are without flag girls to get the action started and Algie and the Harley Harlot always manage to muster up some fine looking ladies to get the bikes and cars rolling on their short run down Main Street.  The flag girls dress it up right in sexy fishnet tops, mini-skirts and stocking courtesy of BikerCrap.com each year and are as much a spectacle to watch as the drags themself.

This year’s Old Town bike drags will be held on July 5th so if you happen to be drifting through the west someplace, you might give some consideration to pointing the front fender in the direction of Old Town Idaho to take in a bit of old school.  While you are there, ask around for Algie and let him know the folks from BikerCrap.com sent you.  Algie and the Harley Harlot won’t be too hard to find, they’ll be right in the mix of things and you might even see Algie take the old knucklehead for a scoot down the quarter mile!
