Stop and Kick the Tires

  • Across the nation the warm weather has everyone’s riding schedule packed full of day runs, overnighters and multi-day motorcycle rallies. In anticipation of this busy riding season most bikers took the time to give our motorcycles a good looking over and performed all the necessary pre-season maintenance however, once the riding started, we all have the tendency to fall into the same bad habit of paying more attention to the black leather wearing biker babes than our balding tires.

The failure to take the few hours and give our motorcycles the attention that they deserve will undoubtedly come back to haunt us at some point, this is a guarantee.   If we fail to keep up with the routine inspections and maintenance of our motorcycles the best we can hope for is that our bikes leaves us stranded in the parking lot during a local bike night but it can get much worse. Breaking down can really put a downer on an out of town rally we’ve ridden 500 miles to attend. Even worse, having a high speed blowout because we failed to take a few minutes to check the tire pressure and wear of our tires could have tragic results.

So here is an idea! How about, in a coming weekend, plan a day to get together with all your riding buds and budetts for a day of motorcycle maintenance. For the ladies that are not turning their own  wrenches, maybe they can head out to some of their favorite shops to pick out some new sexy riding apparel while the grease monkeys change the fluids and give the bikes the once over twice. Make it a day and plan a post maintenance barbeque and if the ladies can be talked into it, bring on the buckets and bikinis and enjoy watching them wash the bikes while we guys attempt to not burn dinner.

Whether we lock ourselves in the garage or bring the gang over for a maintenance fun day, we must all do ourselves a favor and make the time to do a little mid-season maintenance on our motorcycle as one thing is for certain, our bikes look a hell of a lot better rolling down the highway with a leather clad biker babe on the back than broke down on the side off the road with a pissed off old lady waving her finger at us!
