The Awesomeness of Bikers

  • I'll never forget what my Mom and Dad said, when I rode into the driveway on my new Harley. (25 years ago!) "Oh my goodness, you are really not trying to be one of "those" people, are you?" I removed my sunglasses, and with a broad grin on my face, I said, "I am one of those people, Mom!"  It shouldn't have come as much of a surprise to them. I'd been on bikes of one kind or another, since my biological dad bought me a mini-bike when I was 8. But I guess since most of those bikes had more to do with off-roading, she just didn't notice the transition. And my step-dad, well, he was just like "oh for crissakes, I don't know what your thinking!" "You'll kill yourself on that monstrocity!"  I looked him in the eyes, and said, "Dad, we all die one way or the other, and I'd rather go out like this, than in a cage!" He didn't get it, but then again, he didn't get me, most of the time. We were drinkin' buddies for a long time, but then we each got sober, and well, that comraderie just wasn't there after that.

The thing is, I've got all the comraderie that I could ask for, then and now. The brother/sisterhood of bikers, is like no other. If I want to find someone to ride with, I go on-line, to Cyclefish or another cycle page, and post something, and wah-lah, instant gratification. I can't name another organization (with the exception of the Military) where one can do this. Bikers are just awesome people. From all walks of life. There is no judgement here, never was. One can speak their mind, freely, and get feedback. If someone does get out of line, someone is always there to make sure that cooler heads prevail. No matter what you ride, or your style of riding, you can always find someone who is like-minded and start a friendship. And the cool thing is, most of these friendships will last, sometimes a lifetime.

So yeah, I'm one of those people, and I'm damned proud of it!  Now, do any of YOU people, know where a biker-chick can get a good burritto? I'm hungry...
